Secret Garden

Tucked away amongst our dusty childhood collections of Enid Blyton, Willard Price, Kenneth Grahame and AA Milne, our warping bookcase accommodates a treasured and tattered book by the author Frances Hodgson Burnett - the quite wonderful classic - 'A Secret Garden'.

My own name features within the story  - the wilful and unhinged Master Colin - who finds better health in the realms of the enchanted garden. Years past, I would sit and read the foxing pages, with my steadfast bear Bruni, supposing a Robin would frequent my bedroom window sill and lead me to my own secret garden. This is what books can do; they broaden our dreams, our hopes, our imagination. In bear years, Bruni is 43 years old, and has followed me through a world of adventures. When our daughter Saffron Trinity became two, she unwittingly took over the guardianship of my cherished bear and they've been inseparable ever since.

Part of the attraction of moving to our new Hampshire home was the immense garden, blooming with wild flowers, cherry, pear and apple tress. These treasures are hidden from the outside world by a tall ancient wall surrendered to ivy and honeysuckle, with a medieval arched door that opens to the woodland beyond. The garden was always an obvious location for a natural shoot, and we deliberately photographed into the afternoon sun, over-exposing the images, to give a hazy, soft and summery appearance. The result captures those idealistic moments of childhood that we often yearn for in maturity; long lazy afternoons of biting sour apples, chasing honey bees and endless exploration. Inspired by the classic book, Howell & Light endeavour to tell another story through their photography; a tale of the joys of being outside, a blossoming garden where children bloom and great dreams are birthed.

We would love to capture your Summer holidays and little precious ones in their idyllic worlds so please do not hesitate to contact us for a natural or stylised shoot before school term starts and Autumn knocks upon our door.

Ships of the Desert

The ancient way to travel across the formidable southern desert of Morocco is still the most effectual and romantic. For centuries Camels have roamed these tracts of Saharan seas ascending and descending the sculptured dunes, ever changing from the breath of determined winds. Appropriately known as 'ships of the desert' they still haul merchandise between berbers camps today, masterful at travelling vast distances over treacherous sinking sand, their strong, flexible web of toes preventing them from submerging beneath the dunes.

If one is searching for a place to vanish, or escape from the conventional streams of life, the closer you trek towards the Algerian border the further isolated one becomes, this is certainly off the beaten track & tourist brochures. Our striking berber guide introduced the Howells to their camel 'Smile' who initially seemed rather more inclined to flaunt her leathery tongue than flash us any enamel. Saffron has surprising composure around animals, self assured as long as Mummy & Daddy are at arms length, so she introduced herself almost immediately, stroking the Camel's long, slim nose. She then expressed a sudden urge to ride the knobbly kneed beast, so the stage was set for a compelling photo shoot as the warm African sun ebbed slowly over the dusty pink horizon.

An Impromptu Snow Day

A delightful day for high tea in the white forest... an ideal setting for a wintry styled photo shoot. We gathered our props, the vintage tea cups and saucers were kindly supplied by Wendy Brown at The Big C shop in Cromer www.big-c.co.uk. With our woolly socks tucked into our Hunters and a flask of earl grey, we set up our table as the snow continued to fall. On our arrival we were greeted by a charming little robin red breast who fascinated our daughter, Saffron. We look forward to doing similar shoots during 2013 showing different seasons. If you would like a family/couple/kids portrait, or even a post wedding shoot, with a difference we would love to hear from you. Contact us on 07762929144/miriamhowell@hotmail.co.uk. Enjoy the snow everyone!...

January 2013... Snow Bunny!

Saffron and I couldn't resist going out to play in the snow. This cosy bunny 'onesie', given to her for Christmas by Gran & Grandpa, was the perfect winter warmer!
